So what is consultancy, and why should you hire me?

A good consultant is like a therapist

Your therapist isn’t in the business of giving you answers – even if you wish they would! Instead the goal is to use a relationship of trust and intimacy to guide you to your own conclusions through asking skilful questions. You can then work as a team to discuss how to implement change to address your problems, but it’s down to you to do the work.

Like someone seeking therapy, client organisation usually presents a consultant with a list of difficulties. I believe however that creative solutions usually lie somewhere within the organisation itself; skilfully drawing out answers is where I come in. Staff at all levels may have a plethora of suggestions but traditional hierarchies can make cross-fertilisation of ideas difficult. I can facilitate this process.

Your organisation’s own clients will also have valuable insights, but too often seeking the views of service users follows a top-down consultation approach which fails to tap into the rich and messy business of truly radical thinking. We also know that some service user voices – typically those of white, working age, cisgender, articulate patients – tend to dominate the conversation at the expense of more marginalised groups. I use novel data collection methods to identify and emphasise the hidden, the unspoken, the unexpected and the sometimes chaotic to help you generate solutions.

As a qualitative researcher with an interest in innovative methodologies, I don’t stick to web surveys and focus groups. We can absolutely do those if you want, but I believe I can get you richer, more informative data from staff and service users. Click here to learn more about my methodological approaches.
